VocaalLAB Nederland is an international workspace for singers and composers, which develops and produces new vocal music in combination with stage, dance, film, visual arts and other art forms. Since its foundation in 2002, VocaalLAB has built up a network of soloists, which can be drawn on by orchestras, theatre groups, festivals and opera houses.
VocaalLAB produces performances and concerts for leading venues and festivals at home and abroad. In 2007, VocaalLAB was a guest at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna and the Festival Musica Alicante; in 2008 VocaalLAB was present at the Cankarjev Dom Festival Ljubljana and the CDMC in Madrid. VocaalLAB also performed the new opera Colourful Penis by Maria de Alvear at the Dresdner Tage für Zeitgenössische Musik (Dresden Contemporary Music Festival), to great acclaim in the press, including the highly-regarded specialist magazine Die Opernwelt.
Recent highlights were presentations of the Machinations by Georges Aperghis during the Operadagen Rotterdam and the Boulevard Festival Den Bosch, as well as Dusapin’s opera Passion in the Holland Festival and Autland by Sergej Newski in the Bochum Ruhrtriennale. In April 2010 VocaalLAB worked on the new opera Empty Cradle / Bos Besik by Seung-Ah Oh in coproduction with Hollands Diep, and in June 2010 VocaalLAB will perform the new opera A Dog’s Heart by Alexander Raskatov with the Dutch national opera company, De Nederlandse Opera.
The 2010/2011 season will see VocaalLAB working on Oresteia by Xenakis and The Cricket Recovers by Ayres – both coproductions with the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble. VocaalLAB will be performing not only in the Netherlands but also internationally, at venues in Buenos Aires, Santa Fé, Brussels, Ghent, Strasbourg, Lugano and Hannover.
