Moulids are religious festivals that celebrate the birthdays of saints or important islamic or christian leaders. Crowds gather in the days leading up to the 'leila kebir' or big night.
Once a year pilgrims descend on the Hussein mosque in Islamic Cairo for one of Egypt's biggest moulids. On the 'leila kebir' (big night) the alleyways of the surrounding Gamaliyya neighborhood are filled with sufi groups from across egypt. Different singers perform to crowds on numerous stages erected in the back streets.
