What’s video email marketing, and why does it work?

Video email marketing means using video content inside your email campaigns. You generally won’t embed a video directly in your email, since major platforms like Gmail and Outlook don’t support that approach. Instead, you’ll place a thumbnail with a play button overlay in the email, and link that thumbnail to the hosted video.

Since videos tend to grab attention, they’re often better at driving engagement and conversions than static images. You can even use the word “video” in the email’s subject line to let subscribers know you have something unique to share. Videos are also reusable in channels outside your email list, and they can communicate a lot of information quickly.

Common video email marketing use cases

Video can work well at every stage of the customer journey, from the first email a new subscriber receives to the follow-up a buyer gets after a purchase. Let’s look at some video email marketing examples and explain where they tend to have the most impact.

Welcome and onboarding videos

Welcome emails already see some of the highest open rates, which makes them the perfect way to put video content in front of new subscribers. A short welcome video can set the tone for a long-term relationship, introduce your brand with a human face, and give new customers a clear sense of what to expect next.

Product launches and demos

At the consideration stage, a buyer must be able to visualize how the product will improve their life before they commit. A demo video shows your product in action, closing the gap between interest and purchase faster than static imagery.

For teams looking to increase ecommerce sales, product demo videos offer direct routes to conversion. This is also one of the more reliable formats for video lead generation at the consideration stage.

Customer testimonials and success stories

Written quotes tell a reader what a customer thinks about your product, but video testimonials show the proof. Tone, expression, body language, and delivery all give success stories credibility that text alone can't replicate. This format works best at the bottom of the video marketing funnel, where trust is often the primary barrier to conversion.

Event invitations and recaps

A video invitation can make an upcoming event feel worth attending, before a single detail has been read. Later on, a short recap video gives your audience a reason to engage with the campaign well past the event date.

How to add videos to your email marketing campaigns: 3 steps

Learning how to send a video through email is a straightforward process. These three steps show how to incorporate videos in your campaigns effectively.

1. Host your video online

Before you build the email, upload your video to a cloud hosting platform like Vimeo. This gives viewers a clean, ad-free experience when they click through, so nothing competes with your message.

Once your content is live, Vimeo gives you a direct link to the hosted video, which you can use in the next step.

2. Create a thumbnail and link it to your video

The thumbnail is what subscribers see inside the email, since most platforms don't support direct embeds. Create a still image or animated GIF from the video, then overlay a play button icon to signal that clicking through will launch the full content.

Vimeo auto-generates thumbnail options from your uploaded footage, or you can upload a custom image if you want more control. Once the thumbnail is ready, insert it into your email template and hyperlink it to the hosted video.

3. Write a subject line that grabs attention

Include the word “video” in your email’s subject line, wherever it fits in naturally. This signals to subscribers that the email contains richer content than a standard text layout or a few visuals. In turn, that can lead to stronger open rates as intrigued readers click through.

What to look for in a video email marketing platform

Subscribers expect a video to load quickly and play without interruption, regardless of whether they opened the email in Gmail, Outlook, or Apple Mail. To meet this expectation when emailing videos, you’ll need a solution for storing your content securely and optimizing it for maximum performance. Here’s what to look for.

Ad-free video player

A tool that buffers or serves third-party ads before the video plays undermines the campaign before your message has a chance to land. With a platform like Vimeo, which hosts and plays your entire video library without ads, the viewing experience stays focused on your content.

Branding control

Your player should reflect your visual identity, not the video platform’s. So look for a hosting solution that lets you customize the video player to match your brand. That keeps the experience consistent, from the email itself all the way through to the CTA on the video page.

Engagement analytics

It’s important to know how many viewers click on your email marketing video, but you’ll also need to understand what they do next. A strong video hosting platform gives you detailed analytics on viewer behaviors, including how long people watched, where they dropped off, and how they engaged with the content. This data helps you refine both future videos and the email campaigns driving traffic to them.

Strong security

Privacy controls are non-negotiable, since videos sometimes carry confidential product information or early access content that isn't meant for a broad audience. And even if your email marketing videos don’t contain anything sensitive, you may want to protect them against misuse and unwanted sharing. That’s why Vimeo's privacy settings let you control exactly who can view and make changes to hosted videos.

API access and integrations

For teams sending videos at scale, API access cuts down on the manual work required to manage and update hosted content across campaigns. Integrating directly with your email marketing platform also streamlines the process. For instance, Vimeo's Mailchimp integration lets you connect your video and email workflows effortlessly.

Best practices for video email marketing that gets results

Once you have your workflow and tools in place, these best practices will help you plan high-performing campaigns:

Keep your hosted videos concise: Short video content holds attention better after the click. If your message requires more depth, use the video to deliver a focused teaser, and let the landing page carry the rest.
Include multiple CTAs: Put a clear CTA in the email copy near the thumbnail, and include a second one on the video landing page. That way, you’ll capture subscribers whenever they’re ready to take action.
Test various subject lines: Run subject line tests to see what your specific audience responds to. The best tests use nearly identical subjects with a small tone or keyword variation, so you know why one gets more clicks than the other.
Optimize for mobile: A significant share of email opens happen on mobile devices. Make sure the video page (and the video itself) loads quickly and functions smoothly on smaller screens.

FAQ

Should I include captions in my email videos?

Yes, it’s important to include captions in all your email marketing messages with videos. Many subscribers watch video content with the sound off, particularly on mobile devices, and captions ensure that your message lands regardless of viewing habits.

What's the ideal length for a video in an email campaign?

Most email marketing videos should stay under two minutes long. Shorter videos tend to hold attention better and deliver clearer messaging. Anything longer is better suited to a dedicated landing page than an email campaign.

Can I track who watched my video after clicking on it in an email?

To track how subscribers engage with your email marketing videos, you’ll need a video platform with robust analytics. For example, Vimeo shows you engagement data like watch times and drop-off points, giving you a more complete picture of how your audience responds to your videos.
