THREE NEW "LIVE THE LANGUAGE" FILMS

EF International Language Centers have released three new films in its “Live the language” travel promotion film series. Once again it’s Stockholm based Camp David Film and a team led by director Gustav Johansson that are behind the creative work.

DIRECTION & TYPOGRAPHY
In the films, director Gustav Johansson uses his unique way of storytelling to capture the stories of three different students who travel abroad to study with EF - in Los Angeles, Vancouver and Sydney. The films portray students as they arrive at their schools, make new friends, and begin “living the language”. Everywhere they go they communicate in the local language and pick up new vocabulary, illustrated with gorgeous artifact-style typography by Albin Holmqvist.

PHOTOGRAPHY & VISUAL EFFECTS
The photography by Niklas Johansson beautifully depicts the feelings and emotions from unexpected camera angles, capturing the quirky details that make the stories personal. Shot on location with Canon 5d and 7d dSLR cameras, the footage was treated by visual effects studio Goodmotion to create a “scratched and burnt” retro feel.

MUSIC
The stories are accompanied by the “Live the language” theme song, remixed differently for each destination. The song is also integrated into the story, for example, when the student in Sydney plays it on her guitar at a beach party.

TWO PROJECT ROUNDS
The first four “Live the language” films shot in Paris, London, Barcelona and Beijing were filmed during the summer of 2010 and launched in November 2010. They weren’t backed by any impressive media budget, but became a hit in the design blogosphere and in social media.

The three new films from Los Angeles, Vancouver and Sydney were filmed during the summer of 2011 and launched in September 2011. Following the same concept, the new films feature enhanced color graphics, enhanced sound effects – and new vocabulary to learn.

CREDITS:

* DIRECTOR: Gustav Johansson: "We had so much fun working on these films - which I really think you can see in the final result. I'm also very happy that EF had the guts to move away from the standard format and trusted us with our vision."
Only 25 years old, Gustav has already made his name internationally as a commercial film director. Gustav has won Gold at the Cannes Lions, One Show and the Clios, 1st prize at the Cannes Young Directors Awards, as well as the Cannes Future Lions. The EF “Live the language” films brought the attention of an even wider creative audience to Gustav’s talent and he is now one of the most sought after young film directors in Europe and the USA.

* DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY: Niklas Johansson
"The creative freedom of this project made the project"
At the age of 27, Niklas has emerged as one of Sweden's most sought after film photographers. Apart from commercial work, he is also the camera eye behind feature films "Bitchhug" and “Simple Simon,” Sweden’s Oscar entry into the Academy Awards 2011. As brothers, Niklas and director Gustav have a special creative rapport that resulted in the unique visual language of the “Live the language” films.

* TYPOGRAPHY: Albin Holmqvist
"Working on a project like this is every type-nerd’s dream. I'm very lucky to be part of a collaboration with such talented people as the Johansson bros and the producer at Camp David; and having a client like EF that provides us with an opportunity like this is awesome!"
28-year-old Albin is currently Stockholm based, but was living in Barcelona when he created the distinct typography used in the first “Live the language” films. Well connected in the design blogosphere, much of the design world’s interest in the films started on Albin’s personal Vimeo page. He has also collaborated with EF on destination graphics used in EF’s 2012 study abroad brochures and in interior design projects at the company’s schools. For the “Live the language” project, Albin used fonts from many different foundries including Lost Type, Hoefler & Frere-Jones, House Industries and Sudtipos.
