What’s video localization?

Localization involves making changes to a video so it reflects regional and cultural preferences. That often starts with adding subtitles or captions in different languages, but localization techniques extend far beyond basic translations. They can involve extensive adaptation across visual, audio, textual, and structural elements.

The goal of localization is to help global audiences understand and engage with your videos. For instance, Ikea's ad campaigns achieve cultural relevance with simple visual tweaks. A few product swaps, price adjustments, relevant jokes, and dimensional changes make each video emotionally resonant across borders.

Why video localization matters for global reach

Localized content increases relevance, which in turn helps you forge connections and drive engagement. Video localization can:

Improve global reach: Localization lets you tap into potential markets and customer segments that are difficult to reach with English alone. Search engines often favor localized videos, boosting your organic traffic.
Increase viewer engagement: When you incorporate cultural nuances and local context into your videos, you increase emotional resonance. Viewers can form deeper connections, making them more inclined to engage with your brand.
Raise conversion rates: Viewers' understanding improves significantly when product demos and technical walkthroughs are localized in their native languages. As a result, localization tends to improve learning outcomes and video completion rates.
Build brand trust: Localized videos tell regional audiences that the content was made for them, and that your brand cares enough to speak their languages.
Support compliance: Mindful video localization removes cultural insensitivity and miscommunications stemming from literal translations. Brands in industries like healthcare and finance may be required by law to provide localized versions of their content.

Common video localization methods and how they work

There are many ways to localize a video, ranging from simple methods like adding subtitles to complete rebuilds for specific markets. Let's take a look at four common techniques across that spectrum.

Localization method	Best for	Turnaround time
Subtitles and captions	Testing new markets without significant investment	Fast
Dubs	Films, news, ads, and training videos that require immersive voice performances	Moderate, quicker with AI tools
Voiceovers	Educational and training videos where the message matters more than the person delivering it	Moderate, quicker with AI tools
Transcreations	High-stakes brand campaigns where cultural relevance is key	Slow

Subtitles and captions

Subtitles translate audio into on-screen text, while captions add accessibility by further transcribing non-verbal elements like music and sound effects.

Strengths:

Conveys understanding without sound
Improves accessibility for people and crawlability for search engines
Helps you reach a diverse target audience quickly

Tradeoffs:

Doesn’t adapt tone or cultural nuances in detail
May crowd the screen when the video already has text and graphics
Viewers can miss visual details when they’re focused on the text

Dubs

Video dubbing creates a more immersive experience, replacing original dialogue with a new recording in a target language. This method carefully synchronizes timing to match the lip movements of the speaker on screen, and it keeps the background music and original sound effects intact.

Strengths:

Improves brand perception by making the target audience feel included
Avoids disconnects between on-screen text and visuals
Offers accessibility for audiences who can't see or read the text

Tradeoffs:

Non-AI dubs can be expensive and difficult to scale across multiple languages
Narration may fall flat if words are translated without careful attention to nuance
Quality control can be challenging if no one on your team speaks the target language

Voiceovers

Voiceovers don’t replace the video’s original audio; instead, they overlay translated narration. Good voiceovers adapt tone and linguistic style using characteristics of the target language, while keeping the original audio faintly audible in the background.

Strengths:

Offers an easy way to scale localization without full production overhauls
Is a relatively quick and low-cost method, especially when using AI tools
Create a more immersive experience than subtitles and captions, since viewers don’t have to read on-screen text

Tradeoffs:

AI voiceovers without manual checks can create errors
Timing needs to be exact
Can be difficult to add voiceovers when people talk fast or multiple speakers overlap

Transcreations

Transcreation is when you rebuild a video for a local audience, while keeping its spirit and goals as intact as possible. You’ll rework the script, storyline, narration, content, and visuals from scratch to fully translate the content’s message and emotional impact.

Strengths:

Offers strong emotional and brand resonance, increasing loyalty
Results in videos that feel aimed at specific local audiences
Avoids the need to sync up contradictory elements, like mouth movements in one language and voiceovers in another
Lets you add new elements that speak directly to regional viewers

Tradeoffs:

Expensive, slow process that requires deep cultural and market expertise
More difficult to manage at scale, especially when you produce lots of content
Performance is difficult to compare across videos that diverge significantly

How to localize your video content: 5 steps

Localization should be incorporated into your overall video planning and distribution strategy. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you through the process smoothly.

1. Identify your target videos and audiences

The first stage is to decide what videos you’ll localize and which regions you’ll focus on. To do that, ask questions like:

What areas do you want your videos to perform better in?
Are you entering new markets or supporting existing customers in different regions?
Do you need to test paid campaigns in new countries?
Are you seeing traffic from regions that could benefit from localized content?

Also, analyze how your existing videos perform across demographics, so you can prioritize regions and languages for your localization efforts.

2. Choose a localization method

Keep a few things in mind when picking your localization approach:

Target audience region: Audiences in Italy and Germany tend to prefer dubbed content, while viewers in the United States and the UK lean toward subtitled videos.
Video content type: Dubbing fits complex educational topics well, for example, particularly when paired with captions for better immersion and accessibility.
Budget and volume: If you produce videos rarely, you might opt for full transcreation. Teams with limited resources or that create daily social media clips may prefer simpler methods like captioning.

3. Combine AI tools with human input

Today, you can scale localization through AI without compromising on quality or cultural accuracy. Professional video management tools like Vimeo can generate instant subtitles and captions, as well as professional lip-synced dubs that sound native to viewers.

Still, consider having a native speaker review your AI subtitles, dubs, or voiceovers. An expert can bring cultural resonance to your localized videos by incorporating humor, regional dialects, tone, and nuanced context.

4. Adapt visuals and on-screen text

Don’t forget to translate on-screen text and callouts. When creating videos, leave room around any elements that may be localized, since translated text often runs long.

Adapt small details like currencies, date formats, measurement units, and phone numbers so they fit the target region. And consider adjusting the video’s color palette, symbols, images, and gestures as needed so they make sense to and resonate with the new audience.

5. Review and distribute the video

Once your localized video is ready, perform QA to test its performance and any interactive elements. Also, have a native speaker review the content to look for misinterpretations or cultural insensitivities.

After that, find somewhere to host the video securely, ideally in a centralized library so you can manage all multilingual content in one place. Export your video in a platform-recommended format, or embed it on your website using a branded player. Then, keep an eye on your video analytics to gauge your localization strategy’s success.

Localize and manage all your video content with Vimeo

Localizing your videos is an important first step to reaching a global audience. But your video management and distribution workflows also affect the results of localization. When videos are scattered across different tools or shared in various ways, it’s harder to serve each viewer the content they want and track engagement metrics

Vimeo lets brands create, localize, host, and analyze video content in a central management hub. AI tools streamline localization efforts by instantly adding subtitles and captions in 90+ languages and supporting professional dubs. Plus, you can edit scripts, generate chapters, add metadata, and organize multilingual files in the same place.
