What do X-Men, District 9, and Fight Club have in common? Probably a lot of things, but most importantly, major players from each of these franchises signed on this week to write and produce a full-length feature film of The Leviathan, a short created by Ruairi Robinson and previously Staff Picked by Vimeo.
Ruairi Robinson"s epic proof-of-concept trailer for The Leviathan hit Vimeo last week and already, has captured the imaginations of millions. Given the overwhelming social response the film received in just one week, it"s not surprising that Hollywood has taken notice.
The Leviathan isn"t Ruairi"s first dance with success — he first received our accolades in 2012, when he won a Vimeo Award for his sci-fi horror short, Blinkyâ„¢. And since then, he"s gone on to direct other sci-fi horror shorts like Imaginary Forces and large-production films like The Last Days on Mars starring Liev Schrieber. Let"s just say we #calledit.
Robinson is supremely talented, but it is not uncommon for Vimeo success to directly lead to Hollywood interest. Our curation team has heard from dozens of filmmakers who have garnered development deals due to the exposure of a high concept short. Pixels is queued up to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, but did you know it got its start on Vimeo?
When our Staff Picked pals go on to achieve great things, as so many of them do, we can"t help it — we feel like proud parents. You know, hip ones who would never embarrass their children. But because we love all our video children equally, we"d like to share some additional Staff Pick success stories from just the last few months:
OK, enough of the mushy stuff. Jump to the Staff Picks Channel to watch and get inspired by more of our amazing creators.
