Mother’s Day the coolest way: Videos picked by Vimeo’s mamas

Because she is slightly less talented behind the camera than she is behind the keyboard, Rachel puts words together from the primordial (and alphabet) soup for Vimeo. Her favorite videos celebrate women or cheese.

According to the ancient scrolls of Hallmark, we are told that moms love nothing more than chocolates and flowers on Mother’s Day. That’s all well and good, but it just so happens that moms, like other humans of their species, hold a few others things dear: things like love, appreciation, and watching their favorite videos alongside the people that matter most.

How are we so sure? Because we talked to some of the coolest moms we know — the ones who work at Vimeo HQ — and they shared a few of the videos they’re crushin’ on with us.

Whether it’s a favorite to watch with the kids (or a favorite they can’t wait to watch with the kids when they’re 17+), or just an awesome video we’ve loosely tied to Mother’s Day through a generous use of metaphor, there’s something for everyone in this mom-approved playlist. Happy watching!

Courtney Horwitz:

‘Balance is a beautiful thing. It’s bliss, actually. But it usually lasts about as long as this video (approx. six minutes). Knowing that is key. You have it, then you don’t, then you strive for it again, just like my lil’ person Dean does in his own ‘˜Balance’ video (up, balanced, happy, hands up, fall, repeat 3x, break).

Melissa Lyons:

This, because babble is incredibly cute, very non-sensical to most, completely voluntary to tiny humans, and totally exhausting by the end of the day. It represents so much of what parenting actually is on a daily basis (non-sensical, voluntary, and totally exhausting), but at its core, man, is it the best!’

Jessica Casano-Antonellis:

This is my all-time favorite Vimeo video. It tells a beautiful story surrounding birth, life, and death — and as a mother, it really speaks to me and brings out all the feels. Plus I just find the yarn mesmerizing. That said, when I’m home with my two crazy boys, Romeo (age 5) and Frankie (age 3), we’re usually surfing all the skate videos — which are equal parts badass and enthralling.’

Courtney Sanchez:

‘The cliches of motherhood are true. It’s a journey filled with extreme levels of joy mixed with a healthy dose of challenges. I truly love being a mom. But when I watched this film, it reminded me that this is what motherhood looks like on some of those darker days…’

Charmien Fugelsang:

‘My son Henry Jack, who is four, loves elephants. We watch this video together and talk about why elephants need to remain free. It’s a little sad, but he always says after, ‘˜No elephants in chains!’ And who can disagree with that? Henry also loves whale sharks and manta rays and watches this Staff Pick over and over again. Can you tell he has a big-hearted love for large animals?’

Sabrina Kieffer:

‘My favorite is ‘˜A Second a Day from Birth.’ It sounds cheesy, but it makes me think how fast the time goes and how you need to cherish every second with your kids — even when it is really hard.’

Jordan McGarry:

‘My son is 17 months old and starting to use words. He doesn’t really say ‘˜Mummy’ or ‘˜Daddy’ yet, but we hear the name ‘˜Duggee’ a lot. Like, all day. His favorite thing in the world is the show Hey Duggee from the incredible Studio AKA. I’m fortunate that even at this age, he has great taste and wants to watch something so beautifully designed. He was also totally entranced by Dom & Nic’s recent Chemical Brothers video. If he could talk, I’m sure he’d ask how they achieved the brilliant special effects.

Paige Panzner-Kozek:

‘I often show the kids Vimeo videos as we wind down a long day. Though sleepy, my kids were riveted by this whole video: they asked questions and were in awe, wondering out loud how the artist made this and conceived of everything. We were giddy and laughing at every twist and turn. And it still has us talking about graffiti as an art form, building storylines and visual experiences, and they are more aware of the tags and drawings around them in NYC.’

That’s all for this playlist! Many hugs and videos to all the mothers out there.
