RSA Journal Club: Global Eye Health and Refractive Surgery
The Lancet Global Health Commission recently released a report on global eye health that is worth reading. You can find it here:

Untreated refractive errors comprise the largest portion of vision impairment, aligning well with the RSA’s emphasis on refractive surgery as primary care for vision correction. Several RSA members are involved in this effort, such as Ashiyana Nariane, MD from India, Daniel Mulatu, MD from Ethiopia, Nathan Hansen MD and Christian Becker MD from Cusco, Peru, Kishore Raj Pradham of Nepal, and of course the many RSA members who support phenomenal charities such as the Himalayan Cataract Project | Cure Blindness (Matt Oliva, MD, and Dan Reinstein, MD), the Zaldivar Foundation (Roger Zaldivar, MD), and so many others who support global initiatives with their time and resources (Paul Dougherty, MD, Greg Parkhurst, MD, Jaime Martiz, MD) and so many others! Of course, many groups support global ophthalmology (ASCRS Foundation, Project Orbis, and many others) but the RSA’s focus on refractive surgery is very special.
There is much work to do. Many people would like to participate but may not know how to become involved. The RSA Executive Committee met today and agreed that “Global Refractive Surgery” will be a major initiative in the near future. The goal will be to provide knowledge, resources, and networking to support progress. More to come on this in the near future!
The RSA’s mission is to bring the benefits of refractive surgery to more people, and that means all people. Refractive surgery is no longer an elective procedure for rich people, it is a functional procedure for working people and indeed, it is essential for those in the developing world.
