1. In this film - part of our Let's Talk About... Genomic Testing series, produced in collaboration with genetic counsellor Amanda Pichini - we explore the types of results that can be returned from genomic testing.

Our experts explain that different types of tests can provide different kinds of results, and discuss the importance of adequately preparing patients and families for the kinds of results they could be faced with, how long they could take to come through, and what they might mean.

Our experts also explain the importance of preparing patients for a negative result, and the importance of managing expectations about what this means.

*Please note that these films were made during the Covid-19 pandemic, and were filmed via video call in order to comply with government guidelines. As a result, there are occasional dips in sound. Subtitles and transcripts are available.*

Health Education England's Genomics Education Programme is developing a substantial education programme to inform healthcare professionals about the impact of genomics on clinical practice. This video is the one of the many educational resources from the programme.

  2. In this film - part of our Let's Talk About... Genomic Testing series, produced in collaboration with genetic counsellor Amanda Pichini - we explore some of the communication strategies that our experts have found particularly useful in their experience of discussing genomic testing with patients and families.

Our experts discuss the importance of tailoring information in a consultation to the patient: finding out what they already know, considering their individual circumstances/test, and ensuring that you frame information in a way that is meaningful to them.

Our experts explain that they prefer to use simple, plain language and mirror the language of the patient where possible. They recommend avoiding lots of medical or scientific jargon and as well as loaded terms, such as 'faulty gene'.

Professor Monahan stresses the importance of giving patients and families time to consider whether genomic testing is right for them; often there is no rush. He also describes the process of preparing patients from the outset for the familial implications of testing.

  3. In this film - part of our Let's Talk About... Genomic Testing series, produced in collaboration with genetic counsellor Amanda Pichini - our experts discuss the subject of incidental findings.

Incidental findings are results that may be returned in addition to those relating to the original clinical question being asked. For example, someone may be referred for genetic testing for a neurological condition, but their genomic test result could uncover a gene variant that predisposes them to cancer.

Our experts explain that these results can often be particularly difficult for patients as they are more unexpected, and can give the patient and their family a lot to think about.

They stress the importance of discussing the possibility of incidental findings with the patient before testing, and of explaining that the reason they are offered the chance to receive these findings is that there may be steps that can be taken to reduce their risk/help them better prepare. It's also important to note that they can opt out of receiving information about incidental findings should they wish.

  4. In this film - part of our Let's Talk About... Genomic Testing series, produced in collaboration with genetic counsellor Amanda Pichini - we explore the very important consideration that genomic testing, by its nature, can often impact whole families rather than just individuals.

Our experts draw on their experience of managing this complexity and stress the importance of raising the possible familial impact of testing before testing is done.

Our experts also explain the importance of helping patients communicate results to other family members - bearing in mind different family relationships - and of providing support for family members who may be impacted by a patient's test.

  5. In this film - part of our Let's Talk About... Genomic Testing series produced in collaboration with genetic counsellor Amanda Pichini - we address the issue of uncertainty when it comes to discussing genomic testing with patients.

Our experts consider the fact that uncertainty is simply a reality of dealing with genomics and genomic testing, and explore the ways in which uncertainty might present itself and how they might support their patients in considering. accepting and managing such uncertainty.

'Let's Talk About... Genomic Testing' has been developed to cover the key considerations when discussing genomic testing with patients. Produced in collaboration with genetic counsellor Amanda Pichini, and featuring interviews with experts, the series is a great introduction for those less familiar with the process.
