Benjamin Banneker (November 9, 1731 - October 9, 1806) was a self-educated scientist, astronomer, inventor, writer, and anti-slavery activist. He was one of the first African Americans to gain distinction for his scientific and mathematical achievements. Banneker is best known for his impressive almanacs and his crucial role in surveying the city that would become Washington, DC.
