SOMBRIO is a an hour long documentary about the eviction of a diverse community of surfers and squatters that existed on the West Coast of Vancouver Island for more than thirty years. It centers on a family with ten children who grew up surfing on the beach and captures them and other residents over a two-year period, revealing their personal stories and convictions as they come to terms with their impending eviction. Sombrio presents a portrait of a vital subculture in BC’s history and challenges our notions of what it means to be a self-determined citizen.

In 1898, Elizabeth Shaw went to the Tsimshian village of Port Simpson in Northern B.C. and worked for five weeks as the Matron of the Crosby Boys’ Home, a residential setting for First Nations children. She was extremely upset by what she saw at the home and left. Later, while teaching in Greenville-Lakalzap, she wrote a letter to the Women’s Missionary Society of the Methodist Church describing the bad food and harsh treatment at the Home and detailing a case of physical abuse of a young woman there.
Based on Mrs. Shaw’s original letter and the letters and investigation that followed, The Awakening of Elizabeth Shaw combines an impassioned reading with photographs, other archival material and moving images. This video documents one white woman’s response to the unfair and inhumane treatment of First Nations children in British Columbia’s residential schools.
Jim Manly found Elizabeth Shaw's letter and the follow up letters in the BC archive in 1993 while doing research on the Port Alberni residential school to support Willie Balckwater's case against Arthur Plint. Eva Manly and Paul Manly turned the content of the letters into a documentary film that would late be screened across Canada.
Water is largely taken for granted by consumers but it's becoming "blue gold" in the 21st century. Troubled Water is a 52 minute documentary which examines the threats to public water systems and watersheds using the East Coast of Vancouver Island as a case study. Privatization, public private partnerships (P3's or P4's Public Pays for Private Profits), privately owned community watersheds, vulnerable aquifers, over-development, ground water contamination and international trade agreements all undermine the safety and security of public water systems, public ownership and the fundamental human right to access clean drinking water.
Profiling a variety of water sources that represent typical water systems across North America, Troubled Water uncovers the common threats to these systems. The film highlights some good examples of watershed stewardship and encourages viewers to work toward maintaining water as a public trust in their own communities.
