  4. Gujarat 2002 saw large-scale violence. Over the years, much of it has been documented in books, films, fact finding reports and in legal papers, primarily a narrative woven through victim/ survivor testimonies, contemporaneous reportage and formal records.

    But, who were the people in the mobs? This is an excerpt featuring one footsoldier, who participated in the mob attack on Gulberg society, Ahmedabad, in which 68 people died as per surviving eyewitnesses. Among them was Ex-MP Ehsan Jafri, who was brutally lynched by the mob, when he handed himself over, in a bid to placate the mob and save others who’d sought shelter inside his home.

    During 2006 and 2013, I have filmed with a number of foot soldiers and mob members - this is one such interaction.
