This is the animation process for the short film "But We Had Music", which consisted of exploring and blending the techniques of 2D frame by frame animation using charcoal drawings on tracing paper, and stop motion using real light caustics and optical distortions with glasses, that were rear projected onto tracing paper and captured on camera. The raw footage was then composed digitally.
The film was based on the poem by Maria Popova, recited by Nick Cave and directed and animated by Daniel Bruson. It was created as part of the seventh annual Universe in Verse — a many-hearted labor of love, celebrating the wonder of reality through science and poetry, that took place on April 7th, 2024, on the eve of a total solar eclipse. It received a Vimeo Staff Pick badge.
