Commissioned by the Malaria Consortium, Cloud Nine Media embarked on producing a short documentary about the Malaria Elimination in South East Asia (MESA) project run in Cambodia.
A new strain of malaria is currently spreading undetected across the border between Thailand and Cambodia by the 100,000 migrant worker that cross every year. It runs the risk of rendering their current Artemisinin-based treatment redundant if not kept in check. Though the impact in Cambodia is currently minimal, if this new strain were to spread to Sub-saharan Africa, where 80% of the population are affected by malaria, the consequences could be catastrophic.
Following a fascinating ten days in South East Asia working with Malaria Consortium, director and cameraman Steve Maud gained an amazing insight in to the plight of migrant workers in this area, and the challenges faced when trying to fight off malaria attacks that keep on coming back because the medicines no longer work.
