One of America's best directors of the 1970s', and ever since then he's remained one of the most unique, unpredictable, provocative, aggressive, and uninhibited artists in American cinema. Friedkin's body of work extends across many genres and styles from a surreal pop musical, to a claustrophobic drama about the struggles of homosexuality in a pre-Stonewall/pre-Harvey Milk society, to a crime thriller that delves into the consequences of obsession, to both a physical as well as psychological horror film surrounding faith and innocence, and just recently, a grotesquely dark comedy centred on white trash, fried chicken, and what sort of hilarious facial nuance Matthew McConaughey can muster up.
William Friedkin's artistic ballsiness is what discerns him from the crowd. He's always taken chances, and refused to accept a comfort zone, and inturn has given us one of the most interesting bodies of work in American film.
NOTE: Some of his films are so unknown or hard to find that the quality of the clips from those films represented here is not the best. My apologies, but I did the best I could at making this look descent. I'd also like to point out that I chose not to use some obvious choices for music *cough* the iconic 'Exorcist' theme *cough* because I hope that this video will inspire fellow editors to possibly make their own tributes to this master, and thus be able to use more obvious choices of music. It really shocked me that there are barely any tributes to this man on youtube, and the ones that exist aren't exactly flattering (no offence to those few editors) .
