1. In the past year, ETIP Ocean has undertaken extensive economic modelling work to establish the economic and employment impacts of ocean energy deployments.

This work has produced two key studies that calculate the benefits of ocean energy in Europe in terms of Gross Value Added and jobs:

‘A study into the potential economic value offered to Europe from the development and deployment of wave and tidal energy to 2050’ led by Charlotte Cochrane and Henry Jeffrey at University of Edinburgh – available on the ETIP Ocean website.
‘A study into the potential social value offered to Europe from the development and deployment of wave and tidal energy to 2050’ led by Jose Luis Villate and Pablo Ruiz-Minguela at Tecnalia – soon available on the ETIP Ocean website.

In this webinar, the lead authors will present the results under two contrasting scenarios: ‘Europe leads the global market’ and ‘Europe follows the global market’.

Without spoiling the surprise, the results show clearly that when Europe seizes the opportunity of global leadership, the economic and employment benefits more than double.

Watch the webinar to hear about these exciting results in detail!

  2. Any renewable energy project can benefit from consulting the local community already in the planning phase of a project. These exchanges can give valuable information on the characteristics of the local environment, but also increase the acceptance of the project.

Despite the relatively small size of the projects to date, ocean energy developers already actively engage with local stakeholders and communities. Raising awareness of this new innovative sector and harnessing local knowledge can have an important positive impact on the project’s success.

This webinar will present some of the local community engagement practices taking place in ocean energy today and discuss the developments for the future. Make sure to participate and learn useful tips for your next project!

  3. In this workshop, three innovative tools for ocean energy consenting are presented. These environmental toolkits provide easily accessible and up-to-date information to help developers, test sites, regulators and policymakers in the consenting of wave and tidal energy projects.

  5. As ocean energy is an emerging sector, regulators naturally have questions about the impact that deployments could have on marine environment. But information on those impacts is scarce due to the relatively small number of deployments. Different stakeholder groups also face different challenges: authorities lack infallible information, researchers try to model potential impacts to fill that gap, and developers struggle to meet all the monitoring requirements.

To turn that vicious cycle into a virtuous one, more devices should be deployed to produce more data that would then inform the consenting and facilitate further deployments.

This ETIP Ocean workshop brought together ocean energy researchers, developers and consenting authorities to identify solutions to facilitate consenting processes. During the workshop, participants were able to discuss how the existing systems could be improved and what the priorities are for each stakeholder. Discussions in breakout sessions allowed knowledge sharing among colleagues across Europe but also between stakeholder groups.
