Hurricane Katrina and the gulf oil spill are only the latest in a series of adversities for Bayou La Batre, Alabama , a fishing village known as a point of entry for a series of immigrant groups over three centuries. This is a story of the community's struggle to preserve its heritage in the face of those adversities as seen through the lives of shrimpers, descendants of African American sharecroppers, Southeast Asian refugees and a local physician who became the nation's Surgeon General. Based on a book by the same name by Frye Gaillard.
