Pat’s Rubber Leg Stonefly has many aliases but is all referring to a similar pattern. Rubber leg stones, the pickle, ugly bug etc. This fly pattern is one of my favorite patterns not only due to its success but because of its simplicity. It mimics a stonefly nymph in a way that fish seem to enjoy. During the month of march all the way to may when runoff comes, this pattern is always a good fly to tie on. On the upper Colorado, this fly catches more fish each year than any other fly I use. The key to this fly is tying it heavy and tying the legs long so they flail about in the water as it rolls along the bottom.

We have taken our years of success (and failures) and compiled a selection of proven fly patterns that catch fish in colorado. Insects are complicated and vast in their diversity, size, colors and lifestyles. We have found that you’ll rarely have the perfect match for the fly and the key is to get close enough to get success. Most Colorado insects that trout eat have a 4 stage life cycle that the trout will focus on in certain scenarios. Choosing the Right Species, Life Cycle, Color and Size will put you on the fish more successfully.
This is a great resource for beginner fly tyers and intermediates alike. We hope you find value and share our information with your friends and the trout.
