  1. Short timelapse of typical day/night working on cleaning up the 5.5 million images of galaxies from SDSS data (Sloan Digital Sky Survey). This has been an unexpected delay that will take about 6 months to complete. Currently have cleaned 4.1 million of the 5.5 million - removing local Milky Way stars, satellite trails, exposure errors, corrupted files etc. Due to the many variations and amount of judgement calls, it can't be done programmatically as we did with creating the 5.5. million individual images from 350,000 SDSS fields.

It is extremely demanding and difficult work both mentally and physically on the eyes, so I break it up with a bit of other work and talking to other volunteers working on the film.

This will be part of the opening 12 minute sequence of my film "In Saturn's Ring" but is the last section of the film to be completed. Work has been going on for this section since fall of 2013. We hope to complete the film late this year or early next year depending how long this opening section takes.

"In Saturn’s Rings" is a ground-breaking non-profit giant screen film in production photo-animated from over 7.5 million photographs for IMAX®, giant screen & fulldome theaters.

  2. Rough test of work-in-progress of processing Apollo 8 Earthrise photographs for "In Saturn's Rings". insaturnsrings.com/

Created only from Apollo 8 photographs using multi-layer scale/zoom/dissolve based on mathematical expressions. There are only a few photographs taken handheld from several viewpoints, so it's very challenging.

  3. 4K version available for download here. Back our Kickstarter (qr.net/saturn) to help us get a full orchestral score, IMAX® mastering services & global music rights - music will be performed by our hometown Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. greensborosymphony.org/

This is the newest teaser for "In Saturn's Rings", a giant screen space film for IMAX®, giant screen and fulldome theaters distributed by BIG & Digital, coming summer 2014. This DIY, not-for-profit all-volunteer film is from Greensboro, NC, USA filmmaker Stephen van Vuuren with tons of help from volunteer image processors around the world.

Created entirely from real photographs using photoanimation and multiplane photoanimation. No computer-generated images, painting, cloning, tweening, morphing, texture maps, camera projection or 3D models used.

Music for teaser is stock music from Neumann Films but has been customized to fit. neumannfilms.net/. Please back our Kickstarter (qr.net/saturn) to help us get the music we need so it can be seen in the widest number of theaters.

To watch in 4K, choose "original" under quality settings (you need a fast computer and a 4K monitor to view it full rez).

The film is 100% created using only flat 2D photographs (often hundreds or thousands per frame) stitched together for massive hundred megapixel+ resolutions that are scaled and zoomed using techniques developed by the filmmaker, based on Ken Burns and 2.5D photo animation processes.

A computer is actually not even required to do this - it could all be done exactly using photoanimation techniques from 100 years ago (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photoani...).

First render using Ian Regan's fantastic Voyager 2 sequence but repeating frames to slow down motion of Jupiter combined with Axel Mellingers 8000 photo gigapixel all-sky Milky Way. Careful math creates the illusion of rotation - similar to Matrix "bullet-time" but much more subtle. Star positions are very approximate right now.

In Saturn’s Rings is a ground-breaking film for IMAX® and Giant Screen Theaters and Fulldome Planetariums created from over one million real photographs and assembled in one man’s basement studio. Using a unique photoanimation technique, the film will take audiences on a journey through the Solar System and beyond, employing images from dozens of space missions, including Cassini-Huygens, Hubble, Apollo, Voyager 1/2 and many more; and give audiences the feeling they’re flying through space without the use of computer generated models or imagery.

Very excited about this new technique in photoanimation. It involves using a "stuck half-dissolve" i.e. a dissolve from one image to another commonly used in tv and movies for a hundred years, plus some careful math to scale images during the stuck dissolve. Created from thousands of space telescope image via ESO. Looks very 3 dimensional despite being all 2D unaltered photographs. Still have minor stitching errors to fix.
