  1. In this session of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Education Series, Dr. Raj Aneja gives a lecture titled, "Reframing Sepsis-Associated Brain Injury as a Treatable Organ Failure”. Dr. Aneja is Professor of Critical Care Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Associate Director of the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research. He completed his medical training at Christian Medical College, his pediatric residency at Winthrop-University Hospital, and his pediatric critical care fellowship at Children's Hospital of Buffalo, followed by a research fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Dr. Aneja is an internationally recognized clinician-scientist whose research focuses on sepsis-induced brain injury, innate immune regulation, and ICU quality improvement. Dr. Aneja brings deep scientific and clinical expertise to the topic of sepsis-associated brain injury.

  2. In this session of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Education Series, Dr. Janette Mailo from Phoenix Children’s Hospital delivers a lecture on the management of intracerebral hemorrhage in children.

    Janette Mailo, MD, PhD, FACNS is is a child neurologist with Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s. Prior to joining Phoenix Children’s, Dr. Mailo spent seven years at Stollery Children’s Hospital and the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. During her tenure, she served as a directing physician within the neonatal and pediatric neurocritical care program. She was a co-founder of the pediatric stroke program, developed as part of the neurocritical care service, and played a key role in advancing multidisciplinary care for critically ill neurologic patients. Dr. Mailo completed advanced training in neonatal neurology, neurocritical care, and EEG at Western University in Ontario. She completed her pediatric neurology residency and earned her medical degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Dr. Mailo’s clinical and academic interests focus on neonatal and pediatric neurocritical care, stroke, and EEG, with a strong commitment to education, program development, and collaborative care for children with complex neurologic conditions.

  3. In this session of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Series, Monica Vavilala, MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center presents a lecture on cerebral autoregulation in pediatric critical care.

    Speaker: Dr. Monica Vavilala, Professor, University of Washington School of Medicine, received her undergraduate education from the University of Houston and her medical degree from University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas. She completed two residencies, her first in pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School and the second in anesthesiology at the University of Washington. Dr. Vavilala is an expert in the care of injured patients, has authored over 150 peer reviewed publications related to injury, and is internationally known for her work in traumatic brain injury. As a 20 year faculty member in the UW School of Medicine, she has mentored over 27 fellows across UW, has current research support from the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke, and is the co-director of the NICHD sponsored UW Pediatric Injury Training Program.

  4. In this session of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Education Series, Matthew Kirschen from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia moderates a case-based panel discussion focusing on social, ethical, medical, and legal objections to brain death determination.

    Moderator: Dr. Matt Kirschen is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Pediatrics, and Neurology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is the Associate Director of Pediatric Neurocritical Care at CHOP. His research is focused on using multimodality neuromonitoring to detect and prevent brain injury in critically ill children, predicting recovery after severe acute brain injury, and the accurate diagnosis of brain death. He received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University and his MD and PhD from Stanford University in Neuroscience. He completed his pediatrics residency at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, followed by fellowships in both child neurology and pediatric critical care medicine at CHOP.

  5. In this PNCC Education Session, Drs. Virginie Plante, Nicole O’Brien, and Kerri LaRovere deliver a lecture on behalf of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Research Group (PNCRG) TCD Focus Group. The objectives of the lecture are to:

    Describe the physiologic principles and rationale underlying pediatric transcranial doppler
    List clinical applications of point-of-care TCD in critically ill children
    Discuss how point-of-care TCD can support beside care, using case-based examples 

    Speakers: 

    Dr. Virginie Plante is a pediatric intensivist and Assistant Professor at the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Sherbrooke (2016-2019), followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at CHU Ste-Justine / University of Montreal (2019-2022) and a pediatric neurocritical care fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital (2022-2024). In parallel, she completed the Clinician-Scientist training program and a Master’s in Experimental Medicine from University of Montreal in 2020-2023. Her clinical and research interests include neuromonitoring, transcranial doppler, neural control of ventilation and precision medicine.

    Dr. Nicole O’Brien is a Professor at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/The Ohio State University in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Critical Care Medicine. She is the Director of Neurocritical Care and immediate past Director of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She completed Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at the University of California, San Diego (2002-2006) followed by Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (2006-2009) and Neurocritical Care (2010). Her clinical and research interests include neuromonitoring and transcranial doppler ultrasound in any setting, but particularly in neuroinfections in resource limited settings. 

    Dr. Kerri LaRovere is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvad Medical School in the Department of Neurology. She is the Medical Director of the Neurocritical Care Section in Neurology and Co-Director of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. She completed residency and fellowship training programs and achieved certifications in pediatrics, child neurology, adult neurocritical care and stroke, pediatric critical care medicine, and neurovascular ultrasound. Her clinical and research interests focus on 1) promoting the implementation of pediatric neurocritical care as a clinical service that may improve outcomes for critically ill children; and 2) using transcranial doppler ultrasonography to noninvasively estimate intracranial pressure and brain compliance in critically ill children, detect air and solid embolic signals in children supported on ECMO, and screen for moyamoya disease in children with neurofibromatosis.
