On November 8, Isla Vista residents participated in a historic vote determining the future of self-governance in the community. Ballot initiatives E and F weighed in on proposals to create a new Community Services District with an elected board, and a utility tax to empower it to provide locally-controlled services. Prior to the vote, UCSB Professor of History, Alice O'Connor spoke about the issues, debates, and traditions of community-based activism that brought Isla Vista to their decision about their political future, and what was at stake in the vote by drawing on extensive historical holdings and the contemporary scene.
