What’s DRM and how does it work?

DRM is a set of technologies that controls how digital content is accessed, used, and distributed. When content is DRM-protected, it's encrypted during packaging, and the encrypted data can’t be decrypted without a valid license. That keeps unauthorized users from viewing or copying it directly.

A DRM system coordinates encryption, a licensed server, and a compatible player. Each piece has to work together so that protected content reaches the right viewer on the right device.

To play DRM-protected content, the player sends a license request to a license server. The server verifies the user's entitlement and issues a license containing the decryption key. Playback only begins once that verification clears.

DRM isn't a perfect solution for piracy and unauthorized copying, though. It can add playback friction, especially on older unsupported devices and when viewers hit verification errors, and add significant technical overhead for teams managing large files and asset libraries.

What are the major DRM streaming technologies?

What’s a DRM license?

A DRM license is a digital permission slip that tells a player if it's authorized to decrypt and play a specific piece of content.
