Saṃsāra is a central belief in Dharmic religions. It permeates all forms of life, as a cyclical and ceaseless power dictating a succession of earthly existence.

With Saṃsāra, my aim was to capture the vibrancy of India, its culture, and the elements of the Dharmic religions which encapsulate life in this beautiful nation. The Purusharthas, the main objectives of human life, also became a theme for the film. Gandhi’s words are used as a voiceover to help bring life to some of these ideas.

The film closes with the end of human life in one of India’s Seven Holy Cities; Varanasi. Pilgrims come at the end of their lives to Varanasi, to die in the vicinity of the holy Ganges, as it is believed to be a site that can bring Moksha, liberation from cyclical life, and the ultimate goal of one’s existence. It is believed the sacred waters offer the Ātma, the inner soul, a path to the Brahman - the Ultimate Reality in the universe.

This film is the culmination of three weeks exploring northern India, across Delhi, Bīkāner, Rāisar, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Pushkar, Tordi Sāgar, Jaipur, Āgra, and Varanasi, with GAdventures. Having been immersed in India’s vibrancy, and experiencing its wildly chaotic, yet perfectly synchronous culture, the premise for Saṃsāra gradually evolved into the product of this film.

Filmmaker Bios:

Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette has made several documentaries, including LES PETITS GÉANTS and SE SOUVENIR DES CENDRES (Regard sur Incendies), which carry both a Gemini Award for Best Documentary. She signed two feature-length fiction (LE RING and INCH’ALLAH), which will be presented and awarded at numerous festivals (FIPRESCI Prize of the International Festival Berlin critic). She wrote a novel (JE VOUDRAIS QU’ON M’EFFACE Finalist Prix des Libraires) and publishes chronic travel (EMBRASSER YASSER ARAFAT). In 2012, she was named Artist for Peace. In spring 2013, the Place des Arts offered her a white card (duet with Émile Proulx-Cloutier). She then elaborates the Multi Cabaret " Vous Etes libres." She is currently working on new projects while accompanying his latest film (sold in thirty countries) worldwide.

André Turpin, one of his generation’s most gifted filmmakers, was a writer, director, and director of photography on UN CRABE DANS LA TÊTE, his latest feature. His previous work includes the anthology feature COSMOS, for which he directed one of the segments, and the critically acclaimed ZIGRAIL, his first feature film. Turpin has also worked as director of photography on many features, including Denis Villeneuve’s award-winning MAËLSTROM, Philippe Falardeau’s IT’S NOT ME, I SWEAR! and most recently on INCENDIES, for which he has won Jutra and Genie awards.

'A raw yet poetic short film' about the beautiful young girl Ninnoc that has won 7 international awards i.a. at Berlinale & IDFA. In this documentary you find yourself in Ninnoc's head and see her wandering through an empty school. There Ninnoc faces the group. She doesn't want to adapt to the others but she is also afraid of being excluded.
A film about exclusion and inclusion, about being your own, group pressure and the consequences that appear to coincide in the head of the self-willed protagonist Ninnoc.
