State of the State RI

Guest: Ranger John McNiff as Roger Williams, john_mcniff@nps.gov
Host: Roy Pruett Time: 30 minutes
Roger Williams looks back to recall and clarify the founding of the Rhode Island and Providence Plantations colony, the first to declare its independence from England. He asserts that this place was to serve as a refuge for people to protect their beliefs and to allow them to follow their conscience without government restriction. He points out that government can control what we do but not what we believe. Williams emphasizes the distinction between religious tolerance and religious freedom. This place was “the lively experiment” for the world to witness and to replicate, if it chose. His comments on politics and politicians are worth noting.
