This project is a portrait of the front door of the Animation Floor at Tisch School of the Arts that shocks me a lot. The film depicts a situation where a man gets shocked by the door and is transformed into a new self. Starting with figurative, grounded framing and ending with the world of post-shock, I create a contrast between the real world and the imaginative one. Throughout the film, I use a lot of movements and dynamics to show the progressive energy in the man's body. This project also serves as a visualization of my memory of days on this floor.
Feel a sense of nostalgia with a home-cooked meal.
When I hear the word portrait, I think of intimacy and personal relationships. I thought about my older cousin, who lives in the city and who I often see as an older sister. One of her favorite hobbies is cooking, and she’s cooked me amazing meals in the past. She kindly agreed to be filmed for this project. My goal was to capture the interactions between her hands and the materials used to make this meal.
After shooting scenes of her cooking process using my phone, I cut the video and exported it to 15 fps using Premiere. Then, I uploaded the entire 1 minute cut on Animate. I also extracted some stills and exported them to Illustrator to trace over some important elements such as the pan and the bowl. I used a combination of hand-drawn rotoscoping and static graphics to create my piece. Afterwards, I exported the animation to After Effects and made final edits such as adding text and adjusting the audio.
I used my cousin, Sophia Liu, as my model and reference.

These films were created by students at NYU's Integrated Digital Media program in the Spring 2019 semester. The prompt for these projects were to create a one minute portrait of a person, place, or thing (or animal). Students were required to incorporate animation, audio, and rotoscoped or masked video. Sample portrait subjects included the NYC subway, parks, cafes, musical instruments, dogs, cats, keychains, video games, ice cubes, and much more.
